ESL 6 Summer Holiday Homework

6th grade (soon to be 7th grade!) ESL students:

For your holiday homework, you must complete all work assigned in your Holiday Homework Folders before your return. Do not wait until the last day(s) to finish this!

1. Create a Magazine/Photo Journal using the following guidelines:

  • Decide what your Photo Journal /magazine is based on - your holiday, family, books, travel etc. You can choose any topic. You can also include a wide variety of topics.
  • Write relevant articles/entries and use pictures. (You must have at least 5 articles/ journal entries that are a minimum of Gr. 6 - 150 words each.
  • Your magazine/ Journal should be at least 12 sides (6 pages) long. It can be longer if you want. OR create an online magazine/journal on your personal blog (with at least 5 photos/pictures)
  • Feel free to create advertisements. Please do not cut existing advertisements from magazines and stick them in.
  • Most importantly, be creative!

2. Read at least 250 pages including at least one novel and write Reading Responses to topics below on your own personal blog.

4 Reading Response Blog entries (choose one topic each week, not all the last week--see due dates below) of at least 150 words each, answering any of the following questions. Please pay attention to proper grammar, punctuation and spelling. (due dates: Fridays, July 3, 10, 17, 24)

  • Your favorite character? Why?
  • Favorite or least favorite part of the book. Why?
  • Interview a character from your book. Write at least 10 questions that will give the character an opportunity to discuss his or her thoughts and feelings about his or her role in the story. How you choose to present your information is up to you.
  • Write a diary that one of the story's main characters might have kept before, during, or after the book's events. Remember that the character's thoughts and feelings are very important in a diary.
  • Make a comic (graphic novel) or mini-book about the main parts of the story.
  • Write a letter from you to a character in the book, and write the character’s response letter.
  • Add another character to the book. Why would he be put there? What part would he serve? Use direct and indirect characterization to describe the character.
  • Write an alternate (different) ending (climax and resolution) to the novel
Write the plot for a sequel (follow-up story) to this book, including title, characters, setting, conflict, events, climax and resolution.
  • Write a poem to respond to something in the story
  • Pretend you are a newspaper reporter and write a News Article about an event in the story
  • Teach a lesson on story elements, or on this story.
  • Make a book cover (scan it and post the picture on your blog) and/or bring it to your ESL class.

3. Complete any other ESL English holiday homework assigned by your section teacher.

Also, remember that you should attend an English Academy/class for a minimum of 20 hours during the summer holiday. Please be sure your English teacher sends (email/letter) confirmation of your attendance to Mr. Endo at scottendo@woodstock.ac.in.

Happy Summer Holiday!

Mr. Endo's Blog-Week 4

Okay, here it is... Your last holiday homework blog journal. Hope you have enjoyed your holiday. I know I have!
See you in a few weeks!
Mr. Endo

Topic #4: "A Holiday Moment to Remember"
Write about the funniest, strangest, most interesting, most fun, or most memorable part of your winter holiday. Write in detail so that your readers and I can imagine clearly what happened. Answer Wh- questions and use your 5 senses when you write.

due January 31 (150 words or more!)

If you need to check (or send to) Woodstock email, go to the Woodstock School website (http://www.woodstock.ac.in/) and click on "Woodstock Staff & Students : Login to Woodstock email (password required)" (or just click on the link here)

Mr. Endo's Blog-Week 3

Woodstockers, my 9th grade nephew, Gus, has taken control of our blog for the week and kicked me out of my job as teacher. So now you have to answer his topic for this week:

Hey guys,
Isn't Mr. Endo one of the strangest persons you have ever met? Thank God he is leaving our home in Saudi Arabia tomorrow, but you will be forced to deal with him for the six remaining months of school. His blog topics are so boring, so I'm taking over his class.

This week's blog topic: How many different ways can you think of to make fun of Mr. Endo. Okay, just kidding. Here it is for real:

Topic #3: "OMG, (S)He Did That?!"
Write about something you did during this holiday that is unexpected or that others wouldn't believe you did.

If you can't think of anything, make up a story (not real) about something you did. Don't tell whether it is real or not, and your classmates and I will have to guess if you really did it or not!

Give enough details so that the reader does not know if it is true or not!

Peace out Homie G's.
Mr. G-dog
(P.S. Mr. Endo has really cute kids. Must be from Mrs. Endo's side of the family.)

due January 24 (150 words or more!)

Wednesday, January 7, 2009

Mr. Endo's Blog-Week 2

Topic #2: "Visiting My Home Country"

Mr. Endo has never visited your home country. If I were going to visit you and your home country, tell me what I would experience. What would you want to show me? What would you want me to taste, listen to, or try for the first time? What are the most interesting, beautiful, delicious, memorable things? Why do you think so? What things would you NOT want me experience? Why not? (Think about all 5 senses!)

due January 17 (150 words or more-that's 20 or more lines!)

Thursday, December 18, 2008

Mr. Endo's Blog Entry Week 1

Topic #1: "New Year's Resolutions"
A New Year's Resolution is a promise you make to yourself to change or improve something in your life during the new year.

Examples are to learn something new, to get better grades in a subject, to exercise more, to be nicer to someone, to lose weight, to stop doing something that is bad for you, to learn to write better, to participate more in class, etc.

Write about three resolutions you have for yourself during this new year, and explain how you are going to accomplish (do) these. At least one of your resolutions should be about school, and one more about English.

due 10 January

ESL Writing Sample-December, 2008

Hey 6th grade Woodstock ESLers!

Here is your first Blog assignment: a writing sample. Sound like fun? I didn't think so, but it's important, so do your best!

Topic: Write about the best gift you have ever received. It does not need to have cost a lot of money, but it should be something that is valuable to you! It could be a gift, a book, a journal, a pet, or anything special someone gave you.

Write about a half a page to a page, and remember to do your best writing. This will go home to your family with your semester report. You might type first on a Microsoft Word document, then cut and paste.

Have a great winter holiday, and don't forget to check this blog for holiday homework journals to write on this once a week.
